About

The High Desert Chapter was founded in 1979 by Dr. Stu Garrett, a retired family physician with a passion for native plants. What began as a gathering place for professional botanists, government retirees, and early-career scientists has grown into a vibrant community of people from all walks of life who share an interest in the native plants of our region.

Today, we warmly welcome anyone (whether you’re a seasoned botanist or just beginning to explore native plants) to join us in the conservation, study, and appreciation of High Desert ecosystems.

Our work is guided by three core pillars: Restoration, Community, and Education. Through partnerships with the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, we offer hands-on volunteer opportunities that support habitat restoration. We foster a strong, inclusive community of plant enthusiasts, scientists, and lifelong learners. And through educational programs, guest speakers, and chapter meetings, we help connect the public with current research and deepen understanding of native plants, many of which face increasing environmental pressures.

Though we are a small nonprofit, we are proud to make a meaningful impact through collaboration, outreach, and a shared commitment to preserving the native plants of the High Desert.
